Price Labelling

Also known as: Price Tag Regulation, Price Display, Label Information, Fiyat Etiketi

Author

In short

The obligation to display the prices of goods and services offered for retail sale so that consumers can see them easily, in Turkish lira including all taxes; governed by the Price Labelling Regulation.

The Price Labelling Regulation governs how prices of goods and services offered for retail sale are displayed so that consumers can easily see and read them. Price display is one of the matters the Ministry of Trade inspects most often, both in stores and online.

What the Label Must Contain

  • The place of production and distinguishing features of the goods,
  • The sale price including all taxes, in Turkish lira,
  • Where necessary, the unit price,
  • The date the label was issued.

For services, prices are displayed as a tariff or price list visible at the premises. Prices must appear on the goods, on the shelf or elsewhere easily visible to consumers.

Online Sales

The same rules apply to goods and services offered online: prices must be shown including taxes and label information must appear on the product page. Failing to show extra charges such as shipping or service fees clearly before the purchase decision may make the product page price misleading and amount to an unfair commercial practice. This practice is also a dark pattern.

Shelf vs Till Price

A difference between the shelf label and the price charged at the till is among the breaches most often found in inspections. Where there is a difference, the consumer is entitled to buy at the price more favourable to them.

Discount Periods

During discount periods, the pre-discount price on the label must comply with the thirty-day lowest price rule for discount advertising. Breaches of labelling rules are sanctioned by the Ministry of Trade with administrative fines.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do price labelling rules apply to websites?

Yes. For products sold online, prices must also be shown including taxes, and label information must appear on the product page.

Must we include shipping costs in the price?

Extra charges such as shipping must be shown in a way consumers can clearly see before deciding to buy. Extra charges appearing for the first time in the basket may make the displayed price misleading.
