Advertising Self-Regulatory Board Proceedings

The Advertising Self-Regulatory Board (RÖK) is an independent body set up by the advertising industry itself, which assesses advertisements against the industry’s ethical rules. We prepare your applications to RÖK against competitors’ advertisements and conduct your defence when applications are made against your advertisements.

What is the Advertising Self-Regulatory Board?

The Advertising Self-Regulatory Board is a self-regulatory body established with the participation of advertisers, agencies and media organisations. It assesses advertisements under its Advertising Practice Principles, which are based on the International Chamber of Commerce’s advertising code.

RÖK is not a public authority and does not impose administrative fines. Its decisions require the advertisement to be changed or withdrawn, and the media organisations that are members of RÖK comply with them. In advertising disputes between competitors, it can produce a faster result than the Advertising Board.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between RÖK and the Advertising Board?

The Advertising Board is a public authority and imposes sanctions, including administrative fines. RÖK is the industry's self-regulatory body; it does not impose fines but can decide more quickly that an advertisement must be changed or stopped. Where speed matters in a dispute with a competitor, RÖK comes to the fore.

Is it mandatory to comply with RÖK decisions?

RÖK decisions are not backed by sanctions like a public authority's decision. However, the media organisations that are members of RÖK follow its decisions not to publish advertisements found to be in breach, which makes the decisions effective in practice.

Does applying to RÖK prevent an application to the Advertising Board?

No. The two routes are independent of each other. However, the consequences of running both processes on the same advertisement, especially for the defence and the documents, should be planned from the outset.

How long does the RÖK process take?

RÖK usually reaches a conclusion more quickly than the Advertising Board. The exact time depends on the nature of the application and the board's meeting schedule.
